Defending Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered their first defeat of the season on Monday, falling 1-0 to Marseille in a rescheduled clash that ended with home manager Roberto De Zerbi sent off in stoppage time.
The match, originally postponed due to forecasts of heavy rain and storms, was decided in just the fifth minute when former West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd powered in a header at the far post after PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier misjudged Mason Greenwood’s cross.
Marseille, who started on the front foot, nearly doubled their advantage when Amine Gouiri rattled the crossbar. PSG pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were repeatedly denied by Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, who produced a string of saves including a sharp stop from Achraf Hakimi. Goncalo Ramos also squandered a golden chance, heading over from close range after the interval.
Tensions boiled over in stoppage time, leading to De Zerbi’s dismissal, but his side held firm to seal a famous win.
PSG were without star forward Ousmane Dembélé, who remained in Paris to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony, where he was crowned the men’s winner. Manager Luis Enrique, named Coach of the Year at the same event, admitted the loss was difficult to take.
“We are not used to losing games,” Enrique said afterwards. The result leaves PSG second in the Ligue 1 table with 12 points from five matches, while Marseille climb to sixth on nine points.
