Nigeria’s electricity sector is facing a major disruption as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has begun an indefinite nationwide strike over unresolved disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The union directed electricity workers across the country to withdraw their services with immediate effect until management addresses their long-standing welfare and operational grievances.

The strike is in response to the TCN management’s alleged neglect of staff concerns, including poor staff welfare, non-provision of essential tools, and unpaid salaries dating back to April 2025.

The union also cited disregard for workers’ rights and additional demands, such as implementing the National Minimum Wage, ending casualization of workers, providing working tools and operational vehicles, and supplying Personal Protective Equipment.

This development comes barely a year after NUEE shut down operations in June 2024, forcing the Federal Government into emergency negotiations after power supply collapsed across several states.

The current strike mandate requires total compliance nationwide, raising fears of another round of crippling power outages.
