The unrest reportedly followed changes to the way students are governed, with students also demanding the removal of the university’s vice-chancellor.

Although no injuries or deaths were reported, a student leader claimed two students were injured in clashes with security officers.

The university has ordered students to leave its premises, citing safety concerns and disruption to its academic program.

Police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa said protesting students had set four buildings on fire, and the situation remains tense with no arrests made.

Despite the eviction, students vowed to continue their protests.
