Mali has introduced a new visa rule requiring US citizens to post a bond of up to $10,000 for business and tourist visas, mirroring a similar requirement imposed by the Trump administration on Malian nationals.

The move is a retaliatory measure against the US policy, which Mali’s foreign ministry described as “unilateral and unjustified”.

Despite efforts to improve diplomatic relations, including a visit by US officials in July to discuss counterterrorism cooperation and economic partnerships, tensions remain high between the two nations.

The US embassy in Mali stated that the fee was introduced to reinforce Washington’s commitment to protecting America’s borders and safeguarding national security.

Mali’s decision underscores the escalating diplomatic friction between the two countries, with Mali accusing the US of “blackmail” and insisting on equal treatment for its citizens.
