British heavyweight boxer Lawrence Okolie is set to make history as he headlines a major boxing event in Lagos, Nigeria, on 19 December, marking his first professional fight on African soil.

The former cruiserweight world champion will top the bill of a card promoted by Queensberry’s Frank Warren in partnership with Amir Khan’s AK Promotions, although his opponent is yet to be confirmed.

Okolie, 32, who has Nigerian roots, described the upcoming bout as a “historic moment” for both his career and the African boxing scene.

“Big-time boxing comes to Lagos,” Okolie said. “This will be a historic moment for Africa, my family, and my career. There’s been a lot of talk, but let’s see who really wants to dance. Thanks to Frank, George, and Queensberry for making this happen.”

The December show will also feature fellow London heavyweight David Adeleye and unbeaten German-Nigerian prospect Emanuel Odiase, as promoters look to build momentum for boxing’s expansion into Africa.

The Lagos event coincides with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing plans to stage a show in Ghana on 20 December, with growing speculation that Anthony Joshua could fight in either Ghana or Nigeria early next year.

Former world champion Amir Khan, who has been actively promoting fights across West Africa this year, said the Lagos event will be a showcase of talent and opportunity.

“Lagos is about to witness something special,” Khan said. “This event brings together explosive heavyweights and Nigeria’s rising stars. I’m proud to be part of a night that will inspire the next generation of African fighters.”
