President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on training facilities for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies, citing their deteriorating and outdated conditions.

This was revealed by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who chairs the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc committee on the overhaul of security training institutions. Mbah made the announcement during an on-the-spot inspection of facilities in Lagos on Tuesday.

He was accompanied by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the committee’s secretary and former Inspector General of Police, Alkali Usman Baba, and Assistant Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, who heads the Special Protection Unit (SPU).

According to Mbah, the committee has been given 30 days to submit a comprehensive report on the state of the training facilities to the NEC for further action.

He noted that President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the use of obsolete facilities to train security personnel tasked with protecting lives and property while maintaining respect for human dignity.

Mbah said the directive followed deliberations at the last NEC meeting on October 23, where the President emphasized that the current state of the training centres was inconsistent with his administration’s vision of building a modern, effective, and professional internal security system.

“The President was clear that the current condition of our security training institutions does not align with his dream of growing Nigeria’s economy to one trillion dollars within the next five years,” Mbah stated.

He stressed that upgrading and modernising the facilities is crucial to improving the competence and professionalism of Nigeria’s security operatives, which in turn would enhance public confidence and national safety.
