At least 40 people have been killed in a drone strike that targeted a funeral in Sudan’s North Kordofan state.
The attack, blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hit al-Luweib village on Monday, killing dozens more and injuring many others.
The RSF has been accused of mass atrocities in the region, including mass killings, sexual violence, abductions, and widespread looting.
The drone strike has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, with the UN warning that the situation is rapidly worsening. El-Fasher residents are suffering from famine following the RSF’s 18-month siege of the city.
The city of Kadugli in South Kordofan state is also in a catastrophic stage of hunger, surrounded and starved of supplies by the RSF.
UN chief António Guterres has called for an immediate halt to the violence, urging both sides to negotiate and bring an end to the conflict. The Sudanese government is considering a US proposal for a truce.
Since the civil war erupted between the army and RSF in April 2023, over 150,000 people have died, and 12 million have fled their homes, making it the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
