Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the abduction of dozens of students from St. Mary’s Papiri Private Catholic Secondary School in Niger State, calling for a declaration of a “state of emergency” on insecurity in the country.

Atiku described the incident as a “tragic reminder” of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, urging President Bola Tinubu’s government to take decisive action.

The attack, which occurred early Friday morning, has left over 100 students and teachers abducted, with security forces launching a rescue operation.

The Niger State Government has condemned the abduction, stating that the school ignored a prior security alert to close, increasing the vulnerability of students and staff.

This incident follows the abduction of 25 female students from Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in Kebbi State, highlighting the escalating security challenges facing Nigeria.

Atiku emphasized that it’s “not too late” for the government to declare a state of emergency and confront the menace with urgency.
