A former British soldier, Robert Purkiss, has been denied bail pending extradition proceedings over the murder of 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru near a British army training camp in Kenya in 2012.
Purkiss, who was arrested this month, “vigorously denies” any involvement in Wanjiru’s death, but Kenyan authorities allege he confessed to the crime to fellow soldiers shortly after the killing.
Wanjiru’s body was found in a septic tank at a hotel in Nanyuki, Kenya, after she was last seen with British soldiers.
The case has strained relations between Britain and Kenya, with Wanjiru’s family and rights groups accusing the British government of shielding soldiers from prosecution. Purkiss will remain in custody until a hearing next month.
