Guinea-Bissau’s military has formalized a transfer of power, confirming Gen. Horta N’Ta as head of a one-year transition government following turmoil sparked by the presidential election.
N’Ta, a former army chief of staff and close ally of deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, was inaugurated as head of the junta, solidifying control after days of political uncertainty.
The move has been rejected by opposition figures, who accuse Embaló of orchestrating the crisis to avoid electoral defeat.
Embaló’s whereabouts remain unknown, with reports indicating he was arrested by soldiers.
The country, plagued by repeated coups and instability, is now under military rule, with borders closed and a curfew imposed.
