A series of insurgent attacks along National Road Number 380 (N380) in northern Mozambique has forced road transport operators to divert traffic to the longer Nairoto route, which is almost impassable during the rainy season.

The attacks, claimed by the Islamic State, have resulted in material damage and limited supply to northern Cabo Delgado, driving up prices.

The N380 is a vital route linking northern districts of Cabo Delgado to the provincial capital Pemba and neighboring Nampula province.

The insurgents, with extensive knowledge of the terrain, have been targeting convoys under military escort, causing vehicles to scatter and goods to be looted.

The situation affects humanitarian assistance and the resumption of natural gas exploration projects, increasing vulnerability to attacks.

The attacks have not reported any casualties but have substantial material damage.
