Clashes erupted for a second night in Kairouan, Tunisia, between police and youths after a man died following a police chase.
The man, who was riding a motorcycle without a license, was allegedly chased, beaten, and taken to a hospital, where he later died from a head injury.
The incident has sparked fears of nationwide protests, particularly with the January anniversary of the 2011 revolution approaching.
Demonstrators in Kairouan threw stones, petrol bombs, and flares, and blocked streets by burning tyres, prompting police to disperse crowds with tear gas.
The Kairouan governor visited the family and pledged to open an investigation to determine the circumstances of the death and establish accountability.
The tensions come amid ongoing protests in southern Tunisia, particularly in Gabes, where thousands have been demanding the closure of a chemical plant on environmental grounds.
President Kais Saied’s government has faced criticism for allegedly using the judiciary and police to stifle criticism, accusations he denies.
