A South Sudanese lawmaker, Luka Mathen Toukpiny Luk, was shot dead at his residence in Juba, the capital city, on Tuesday night. The 10 p.m. attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen who entered his home in the Gudele neighborhood.
Mathen, who represented Cueibet County of Lakes State in the Council of States, died an hour later at a nearby hospital.
Two suspects have been arrested, while two others remain at large, as security forces investigate the killing.
Mathen was known for his vocal and independent stance, serving as chair of the Council of States’ education committee and supporting education in his constituency.
