A high court in Lagos has dismissed a suit seeking to invalidate the laws establishing the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC).

Judge Akintayo Aluko ruled that the applicant, Human Rights and Empowerment Project Ltd/Gte, failed to prove that the commissions breached constitutional provisions on state religion and discrimination.

The court held that the applicant’s evidence, largely based on newspaper reports, was insufficient and constituted hearsay.

The judge noted that the commissions’ existence did not amount to adopting a state religion, and the applicant failed to identify any group whose constitutional rights had been infringed.
