The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially rejected the impeachment proceedings initiated by the state’s House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.

In a press statement released Thursday, the party warned that the move threatens to destabilise the state and is an unacceptable escalation of political rivalries.

This development comes as the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly, which is backed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, formally presented a notice of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy.

The allegations cited by the 26 lawmakers include the non-presentation of a budget, spending state funds without legislative approval, and withholding funds from the Assembly.

In response, the APC leadership, through spokesperson Darlington Nwauju, described the situation as an “unfortunate development” and a “hangover” from past conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that should not be allowed to disrupt the current APC government.

The APC argued that the impeachment threat, seemingly centered on budgetary issues, is unfounded.

The party pointed out that a ₦1.485 trillion budget, approved during a previous period of emergency rule, is valid until August 2026, and the constitution allows the governor a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.

Pledging to do everything possible to prevent the destabilisation of the Fubara administration, the party strongly urged its members in the House of Assembly to resist external pressure and immediately discontinue the impeachment process to avoid dragging the party’s image “into the mud” and stalling the state’s progress.
