The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has staunchly condemned the latest impeachment proceedings launched against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding the immediate dismissal of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

In a press briefing, IYC President Alaye Theophilus described the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly as an act against the will of the people, accusing Wike of orchestrating political unrest in the state.

The youth group called on President Bola Tinubu to sack the former governor, whom they labeled an “enemy of democracy” for his alleged role in the crisis.

This condemnation is part of a broader backlash against the impeachment attempt, which is the third one initiated against Governor Fubara.

The South-South Youths Initiative (SSYI), the Ijaw National Congress (INC), and even factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have also called for the assembly to halt the proceedings.

Assembly members loyal to Wike allege “gross misconduct” by Fubara, including unauthorized spending and demolishing the assembly complex.

However, various groups are appealing to President Tinubu to intervene, as he did previously, arguing that the conflict is undermining governance and destabilizing the state for personal political reasons.

While condemning the impeachment, the IYC also pledged its support for Governor Fubara’s second term and President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
