The family of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly accused a Lagos hospital of gross medical negligence following the tragic death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.

The family alleges that a series of critical failures at Euracare Hospital led to the toddler’s death, including administering too much sedation, denying him oxygen, and leaving him unattended, which they claim caused him to have a heart attack and suffer a brain injury.

Euracare Hospital has expressed its “deepest sympathies” but denied any improper care, stating that the child arrived “critically ill” from other facilities and that all actions taken were in line with international medical standards.

While acknowledging the “profound and unimaginable loss,” the hospital has launched its own internal investigation.

In response to the public outcry, the Lagos State government has also initiated a separate, independent investigation, vowing that any individual or institution found culpable of professional misconduct will face “the full wrath of the law.” The government has urged the public to avoid speculation while the official inquiry is ongoing.
