The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an official investigation into the chaotic scenes that followed Saturday night’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal between Algeria and Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Sunday, CAF confirmed that several Algerian players and members of the technical crew confronted match officials immediately after the final whistle. According to the football body, the situation escalated when some members of the Algerian delegation followed the referees into the tunnel—an action CAF described as “unacceptable” and a clear breach of the competition’s disciplinary regulations.

CAF also revealed that it is examining reports of altercations involving journalists and other media personnel after the match, as tensions reportedly extended beyond the pitch.
The quarterfinal clash, played in Marrakech, ended in a 2-0 victory for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, a result that provoked strong reactions from the Algerian camp.

CAF assured that it will thoroughly review all relevant match reports, referee submissions, and available video evidence as part of the investigation. The football governing body added that appropriate disciplinary actions will be announced once the process is concluded.
The incident adds to the growing controversy surrounding the high-stakes encounter as AFCON 2025 moves into its decisive phase.
