The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc. (NBET), over the alleged failure to account for ₦128 billion in public funds.

The allegations, contained in the Auditor-General’s report, highlight financial mismanagement in the power sector, contributing to persistent electricity failures.

The report reveals that the Ministry of Power failed to account for over ₦4.4 billion transferred to project accounts, with no evidence of expenditure.

Additionally, ₦95 billion was paid to contractors without documentation or proof of project execution.

Other irregularities include unapproved foreign travel expenses (₦33 million) and non-personal advances to staff (₦282 million) exceeding statutory limits.

SERAP is seeking an order of mandamus to compel Adelabu and NBET to account for the missing funds and disclose details of expenditure, including beneficiaries and contractors involved.
