Twenty-one members of the Kano State House of Assembly have defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), following Governor Abba Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP.
Yusuf cited “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” as reasons for his exit, which took effect on January 23, 2026.
The defectors include prominent lawmakers such as Jibril Ismail Falgore, speaker representing Rogo, and Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, deputy speaker representing Tofa/Rimin Gado.
The move comes after Yusuf’s meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, fueling speculation about his potential joining the APC.
Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the NNPP, has condemned the defection, declaring January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”.
