Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized President Bola Tinubu over the frequent collapse of Nigeria’s national electricity grid, saying it contradicts Tinubu’s 2022 campaign promise to deliver steady power in his first four years or not seek a second term.

The national grid has collapsed twice in January 2026 alone, with 12 failures reported in 2025.

Obi highlighted Turkey’s power generation capacity, which is over 120,000 megawatts, compared to Nigeria’s less than 5,000 megawatts, despite having a larger population.

He urged Tinubu to focus on addressing Nigeria’s problems rather than embarking on foreign trips.

The frequent power outages have sparked concerns among Nigerians, with Obi calling for accountability and responsible leadership.

The national grid’s instability has been attributed to leadership failures and inadequate policy implementation.
