Nigeria’s national grid experienced a partial collapse on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, due to a voltage disturbance at the Gombe transmission substation.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that the incident affected multiple substations, including Jebba, Kainji, and Ayede, but stressed that it was not a total system collapse.

Electricity supply has since been restored across affected areas.

This marks the second grid disturbance in 2026, following multiple collapses in 2025, with the last incident occurring on December 29.

NISO attributed the collapse to the tripping of transmission lines and generating units, and assured that corrective actions were taken to stabilize the system.
