The Nigerian Senate has rejected a proposed amendment to the Electoral Act, which would have made electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

The rejected provision would have required presiding officers to transmit results from each polling unit to the IREV portal in real time.

Instead, the Senate adopted the existing provision, allowing results to be transferred in a manner prescribed by the Commission.

The decision comes amid ongoing deliberations on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, with the Senate seeking to reconcile differing views on electoral reforms.

The bill’s fate remains uncertain, with potential implications for the 2027 general elections.
