The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has expressed deep concern over the rising wave of killings across Nigeria, particularly in the northern parts of the country, describing the situation as deeply troubling and depressing.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by his Private Secretary, Chief Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, the monarch lamented the persistent bloodshed, noting that the sanctity of human life—an enduring pillar of traditional and cultural values—is being repeatedly violated.
Oba Ewuare II condemned all acts of violence and terror, describing them as a grave assault on national peace and unity. Speaking on behalf of the Benin Kingdom and the people of Edo State, the monarch said the continued loss of innocent lives has plunged the nation into anguish.
He extended heartfelt condolences to families and communities affected by the recent killings, particularly in Kwara State, mourning the irreplaceable lives lost and praying for the repose of the departed souls and strength for the bereaved.
The Oba also acknowledged the heavy responsibility borne by traditional institutions in affected communities, commending their efforts to guide their people through trauma while preserving moral and cultural values. He affirmed that the Benin Kingdom stands in solidarity with these institutions and all Nigerians during the period of national distress.
Furthermore, the monarch expressed support for ongoing national and state security initiatives. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for efforts aimed at combating terrorism and insecurity across the country, and praised Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for security measures implemented within the state.
Oba Ewuare II urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and to actively cooperate with government authorities at all levels to address the security challenges confronting the nation. He called for urgent, decisive, and sustained action to restore peace, security, and justice, stressing that stability must return to enable Nigerians live without fear.
Describing the violence as a national malaise that has brought untold grief to countless families, the monarch reiterated his hope for a safer and more peaceful Nigeria.
