The Senate on Tuesday amended the votes and proceedings of its plenary session held last Wednesday, February 4, regarding its resolutions on Section 60, Subsection 3 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which deals with the transmission of election results from polling units.

The amendment followed a motion moved by Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno and endorsed by the Red Chamber. The motion clarified that while electronic transmission of results will be adopted, in the event of a communication failure, Form EC8 which contains the duly entered, stamped, and signed results at the polling unit, counter-signed by polling agents—will serve as the primary source for collation.

During the session, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe moved a counter motion calling for a division, or individual voting, on Section 60, Subsection 3. However, he later withdrew the motion after Senate President Godswill Akpabio advised him to proceed with the original motion.

The amendment aims to provide clarity on the procedure for transmitting and collating election results, ensuring both electronic and physical records are considered in the event of technical failures.
