Nigerian leaders have extended messages of goodwill to Christians and Muslims as the Christian season of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan commenced simultaneously on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

In a statement released on Wednesday, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, described the alignment of Lent and Ramadan as “a rare spiritual convergence to cherish and revere.”

He noted that the two sacred observances beginning on the same day marked a significant moment, saying the coincidence symbolises shared sacrifice, reflection, and an opportunity for national renewal at a time when the country faces social and governance challenges.

According to him, both seasons are characterised by fasting, prayer and thanksgiving, describing the overlap as a “Double Fast” and a divine invitation for Nigerians to rise above divisions and rediscover their common humanity.

Obi urged citizens to allow the period inspire not only devotion but also compassion and action.

“Let our fasting remind us of the suffering of our neighbours; let our prayers stand as a shield over our nation,” he said, while wishing Christians and Muslims a meaningful observance.

Similarly, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, extended his greetings to Muslim faithful in the state at the commencement of Ramadan.

He prayed that the holy month would bring peace, strength and clarity to adherents, urging residents to continue to uphold unity and keep one another in prayers.

Lent, observed by Christians worldwide, is a solemn period of fasting and reflection leading up to Easter, while Ramadan is a sacred month in Islam marked by fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer and acts of charity.
