President Bola Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law, following its passage by the National Assembly on Tuesday.
The new law is expected to enhance transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process, although some critics argue it doesn’t go far enough in ensuring real-time electronic transmission of results.
The bill introduces key changes, including mandatory electronic transmission of election results, reduced timelines for election notice and candidate submissions, and stricter penalties for electoral offenses. However, the Senate rejected proposals for real-time electronic transmission of results and electronically generated voter identification.
