Chad’s government has announced the closure of its border with Sudan until further notice, citing repeated incursions and violations by forces involved in Sudan’s civil war.

The decision aims to prevent the conflict from spreading to Chadian territory and protect its citizens and refugee populations.

The conflict in Sudan, which has been ongoing for almost three years, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced 11 million, according to the UN.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have conducted several operations near the Chad border, resulting in the deaths of at least nine Chadian soldiers since December.

Chad reserves the right to retaliate against any aggression or violation of its territory and borders. While cross-border movements of goods and people are suspended, exceptional exemptions for humanitarian reasons will be allowed.
