A fire has erupted at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirms that its firefighting team is on the scene, working to contain the situation. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but authorities suspect an electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling may be to blame.
Passengers and airport personnel are being evacuated, and mutual aid arrangements have been activated with the Lagos State Government and other emergency agencies.
This incident comes as the airport undergoes a ₦712bn renovation to upgrade its facilities and meet international standards.
The project has been defended by Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo as necessary to boost Nigeria’s aviation sector.
