The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Pastor Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, filling the vacancy left by the late Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away in December 2025.
Akpe, a seasoned public administrator and politician, was nominated by Governor Douye Diri and approved by the assembly on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
Akpe brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Chief of Staff to Governor Diri, and previously as a two-term member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.
He holds a PhD and is also a Christian minister, often addressed as Hon. (Dr) or Pastor Peter Akpe.
The confirmation comes after Ewhrudjakpo’s death, which was announced with “deep regret and profound shock” by the state government.
Governor Diri declared three days of mourning and directed an autopsy to determine the cause of Ewhrudjakpo’s death.
