Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have signed a landmark science and technology agreement, ending a 20-year hiatus, to drive innovation and scale startups across Africa.
The pact, signed in Abuja, positions Nigeria as a central hub for scientific advancement in Africa.
The agreement aims to foster growth in Nigeria’s technological sector, which already produces most of Africa’s “unicorns” (startups valued over $1 billion).
A dedicated EU-Nigeria Joint Science and Technical Cooperation Committee has been established to create strategies for direct and indirect cooperation.
The partnership is anchored in Horizon Europe, the world’s largest science and technology program, and aligns with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing innovation for national development.
