Ghana has removed the name of Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a coup leader who overthrew founding father Kwame Nkrumah 60 years ago, from the country’s main airport.
The airport, previously known as Kotoka International Airport, will revert to its original name, Accra International Airport.
The move has sparked controversy, with some arguing it erases Kotoka’s legacy, while others say it contradicts Ghana’s democratic values.
The government states the change aims to project a neutral national image, but critics question the priority given to the issue amid pressing concerns like unemployment and living conditions.
Kotoka led the 1966 coup that ousted Nkrumah and was later killed in a failed counter-coup attempt at the airport in 1967.
The debate reflects ongoing discussions about Ghana’s history and national identity.
