The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a change in the date for the presidential and national assembly elections, moving it from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027.
The governorship and state houses of assembly election is now scheduled for February 6, 2027.
This revision follows the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, emphasized that the timetable is anchored in the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2022, as amended.
The commission has uploaded the detailed timetable and schedule of activities to its official website and circulated it to registered political parties and stakeholders.
Key dates include:
- Party Primaries: May 22 – June 20, 2026
- Submission of Nomination Forms: July 14-28, 2026 (presidential and national assembly candidates)
- Campaigns: September 23, 2026 – January 15, 2027 (presidential and national assembly elections)
- Election Dates: January 16, 2027 (presidential and national assembly), February 6, 2027 (governorship and state houses of assembly)
