The attack, which occurred on Monday, has left the town’s modern market in flames, with residents fleeing their homes amidst sporadic gunfire.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reports that troops are currently engaging the insurgents in an intense exchange of gunfire.
A video circulating on Facebook shows chaotic scenes in the town, with heavy gunshots heard in the background.
The Nigerian military has yet to issue an official statement confirming casualties or damage extent.
Gaidam, located in northern Yobe, has repeatedly faced attacks by insurgent groups operating in the Lake Chad region.
