Guinea’s government has dissolved 40 political parties, including the country’s three main opposition groups, just two months after President Mamady Doumbouya was sworn in.
The parties were dissolved for “failure to fulfil their obligations,” according to a decree signed by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation.
The dissolved parties include the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG), led by Cellou Dalein Diallo, the Rally of the People of Guinea (RPG), led by ex-president Alpha Conde, and the Union of Republican Forces (UFR).
Their assets have been placed under sequestration, and a curator has been appointed to oversee their transfer.
Doumbouya, who came to power in 2021 after toppling Conde, has been criticized for cracking down on civil liberties and banning protests.
The move has raised concerns about the country’s democratic transition.
