Two suspected commanders of the Ansaru terror group, Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba, received weapons training in Libya, a Department of State Services (DSS) operative testified in court on Monday.

The witnesses revealed that foreign instructors from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria trained the defendants on handling weapons and manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The defendants allegedly admitted to being members of Ansaru, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram involved in terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

They also confessed to founding the Ansaru group in Jigawa State in 2012 and participating in attacks on Nigerian Army formations and kidnappings.

The court has ordered a trial-within-trial to determine the admissibility of the defendants’ confessional statements.
