The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed viral videos alleging police involvement in a shooting during the clash at the National Union of Road Transport Workers headquarters in Garki II, Abuja, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, clarified that officers were only deployed to restore order following a distress call.

According to the statement, the command received a report at about 7:00 a.m. on March 23, 2026, that a large group of about 300 individuals armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows had stormed the NURTW secretariat and were removing items from the premises.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, subsequently led a response team to the scene.

Preliminary findings indicated that the group was attempting to enforce a court order without the presence of authorised court officials, including sheriffs.

The situation escalated into a confrontation when other union members resisted the move, resulting in violence. One person sustained severe machete wounds to the neck, while several others suffered varying degrees of injuries.

Police operatives rescued the injured victim and ensured that those affected were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The command confirmed the arrest of seven suspects at the scene, identified as Sulaiman A. Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Alhaji Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi, and Ibikunle T. Baruwa.

They have since been charged before Magistrate Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2.

The police added that normalcy has been restored to the area, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
