Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need for political realignment.

Kwankwaso, who was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, confirmed his exit in a statement issued on Sunday, describing the decision as difficult but necessary given Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
He said his decision followed a careful consideration of the country’s current political direction, adding that he needed to align with a platform that would better support his vision for national change.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party with immediate effect,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to the party leadership, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, and party structures across all levels for their support during his time in the party.
Kwankwaso also thanked members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and supporters nationwide, urging continued collaboration toward building a better future for Nigeria.

Although he did not disclose his next political destination, reports indicate he is expected to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with a formal declaration reportedly scheduled for Monday in Kano.
Sources also suggest he may be joined by key political allies, including former Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, as part of the anticipated defection.
The development follows a recent meeting between Kwankwaso and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja, where both leaders reportedly discussed national political issues.
Kwankwaso’s resignation marks a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future elections, with further developments expected in the coming days.
