A three-storey building that was being used as a church collapsed on worshippers in Accra, Ghana, killing three people, including two women, and injuring 20 others, mostly women and children.

The interior minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said emergency teams worked through the night to rescue those trapped, with 20 people rescued and receiving treatment. The cause of the collapse, which occurred after heavy rain, is unknown, and investigations are underway.

The building, part of a school in Accra’s New Town area, was unfinished and had been lying unused for several years. Locals say it was poorly constructed and had no maintenance.

The incident has sparked debate about building safety in Ghana, recalling the 2012 collapse of a multi-storey shopping centre due to poor construction.
