The Nigeria Olympic Committee has announced June 27, 2026, as the date for this year’s Olympic Day celebration, with plans for a nationwide event aimed at promoting physical activity and social inclusion.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the committee said the annual initiative, held under the global framework of Olympic Solidarity, will encourage Nigerians of all ages to embrace the core Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.

According to the NOC, the event will also highlight the importance of regular exercise, noting that simple activities such as jogging and walking can significantly improve physical and mental health by burning calories, strengthening muscles, and reducing stress.

Chairman of the Sport-For-All Commission, Abdul Ibrahim, emphasised that the 2026 edition will focus on inclusivity and collective participation. He urged Nigerians to engage in physical activities together, noting that shared exercise enhances motivation and strengthens social bonds.

Following what it described as record participation in 2025, the committee said invitations have been sent to all states, calling on sports councils to begin early preparations to ensure widespread involvement across the country.

President of the NOC, Habu Gumel, added that this year’s celebration aims to bridge generational gaps by bringing young and older people together through sport.

The committee expressed optimism that the event would achieve nationwide reach and deliver a meaningful impact by promoting healthier lifestyles and stronger community connections.
