Authorities in Gabon have arrested prominent opposition leader Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, his political party confirmed on Thursday.
The Together For Gabon (EPG) party said Bilie-By-Nze was detained at his residence late Wednesday, describing the arrest as “arbitrary” and contrary to the rule of law.

According to the party, the arrest is linked to an incident dating back to 2008, when Bilie-By-Nze served as head of an organising committee.
A former prime minister and presidential candidate in last year’s election, Bilie-By-Nze has been a vocal critic of the government, opposing recent measures such as the suspension of social media and reforms to nationality laws introduced by decree.
The policies were implemented under President Brice Oligui Nguema amid growing unrest, including a teachers’ strike.
The EPG condemned the arrest as a political move aimed at silencing dissent, warning that it raises concerns about democratic freedoms in the country.
