Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, which previously allowed eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.
In a statement issued on Friday, the company said the decision forms part of ongoing efforts to align its operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, explained that the move is aimed at ensuring compliance while maintaining responsible service delivery.

Despite the suspension, the telecom operator assured customers that they will continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to regular airtime and data purchases through existing channels.
Airtel noted that the temporary pause will not impact overall service quality or network performance nationwide.
Also commenting, Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the step as both necessary and responsible.
“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he said.
The company added that it will keep customers informed on any updates regarding the status of the suspended service.
The development comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based telecom services in Nigeria, with operators adjusting to new compliance standards.
