The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Oby Kechere, best known for her role in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa.

Her passing was confirmed by the Directors Guild of Nigeria, which announced that she died on April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

In a statement signed by its National President, Uche Agbo, the guild described Kechere as a committed professional and a valued member, noting that her contributions to the growth of Nollywood—particularly within the Abuja chapter—would not be forgotten.

Kechere, fondly known as “Ms Koi Koi,” gained widespread recognition for her performance in Aki na Ukwa, a film that helped shape a generation of Nigerian comedy and launched several careers in the industry.

Born in Mbaise, Imo State, she began her acting career in 2001 with a role in the acclaimed film August Meeting. She went on to feature in several productions, including Aki na Ukwa 2, Final Surrender, Women Affair, and Circle of Lives.

Beyond her work in film, Kechere was also involved in public service, contributing to vaccination awareness campaigns through her work with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.

Her death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans, many of whom have taken to social media to celebrate her legacy and impact on Nigerian cinema.

Kechere’s passing marks another significant loss for Nollywood, as the industry continues to grapple with the deaths of some of its respected figures.
