Defending champions Nigeria will take on Jamaica in the final of the Unity Cup on Saturday at The Valley, Charlton Athletic’s home ground in London, with the Super Eagles determined to retain the trophy and avoid any slip-ups against the Reggae Boyz.
Head coach Eric Chelle has indicated that he could make tactical and personnel adjustments for the highly anticipated clash after his side secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in Tuesday’s semi-final. Jamaica also booked their place in the final with a 2-0 win over India.
The fixture rekindles memories of last year’s dramatic final at Brentford Stadium, where the two teams produced a thrilling contest. Nigeria took an early lead through Moses Simon before Kaheim Dixon restored parity for Jamaica. Samuel Chukwueze put the Super Eagles back in front shortly after the restart, but Jon Russell struck again for the Caribbean side to send the match into a penalty shootout.

Nigeria held their nerve from the spot, converting all five penalties, while Dwayne Atkinson missed Jamaica’s decisive kick, blasting over the bar guarded by Stanley Nwabali. The victory saw the Super Eagles successfully defend a title they had previously won in 2002 and 2004.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s final, Chelle emphasised his commitment to instilling a winning mentality within the squad, regardless of how the match unfolds.
“Penalties are part of the game, and they can decide who wins a match. Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win,” Chelle said.
“This is the culture I have put in these boys — the winning culture. I don’t know if Saturday’s game will end in penalties; what I know is that I have prepared my team to win. These are very young players with a bright future, and they are hungry for success at any level.”
One of the standout performers for Nigeria has been debutant Femi Azeez, who scored both goals in the semi-final win over Zimbabwe. His brace made history, as he became the first player to score twice on his senior debut for Nigeria since Mathias Obianika achieved the feat in a 4-0 victory over Burkina Faso 55 years ago.
With confidence high and a trophy at stake, the Super Eagles will be aiming to continue their dominance in the competition and add another Unity Cup title to their collection.
