Egypt secured the first FIFA World Cup victory in their history with a 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand in their Group G clash in Vancouver on Sunday, boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

The Pharaohs recovered from an early setback after New Zealand defender Finn Surman opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a powerful header.

Egypt responded positively and found an equaliser through Mostafa Zico, who headed home a cross from Mohamed Hany to restore parity.

Captain Mohamed Salah then inspired the turnaround in the second half. The Liverpool forward combined neatly with Zico before curling a left-footed effort into the net in the 67th minute to put Egypt ahead.

Salah later turned provider, setting up substitute Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” for Egypt’s third goal with a precise delivery that the forward converted with a low header.

The victory moves Egypt to the top of Group G with four points, leaving them needing only a draw against Iran in Seattle on Friday to secure a place in the Round of 32.

Speaking after the match, Salah described the result as a historic achievement for the country.

“In years to come, we will remember that this was one of the achievements in history,” he said.

He also praised the strong support from Egyptian fans in Vancouver.

“It feels like we are playing in Egypt. It’s a great win and a great vibe,” Salah added.

In the other Group G fixture, Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw. Belgium will take on New Zealand in their final group match on Friday.
