Lagos has officially entered the global climate race after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with the Climate Group on Monday in London during the 2026 London Climate Action Week.

The agreement brings Lagos State into the Under2 Coalition, an international network of more than 180 states and regions that together represent over half the global economy and are committed to achieving net-zero emissions, where the volume of greenhouse gases released is balanced by the amount removed from the atmosphere.

While the MoU does not impose legal obligations, it aligns Lagos with the coalition’s efforts to share best practices, accelerate climate action, and transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.

Speaking on the partnership, Sanwo-Olu said that cities and regions are increasingly leading climate action and that joining the coalition would strengthen Lagos’ commitment to a resilient future while expanding global collaboration, adding that as Africa’s economic hub, Lagos intends to show that climate action and economic growth can go hand in hand for the benefit of current and future generations.

Titilayo Oshodi, the governor’s Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, noted that Lagos is moving from ambition to implementation through its State-Determined Contributions framework and that membership in the Under2 Coalition will provide a platform to exchange knowledge and showcase the state’s climate projects.

The Under2 Coalition team welcomed Lagos as one of Africa’s leading subnational governments with a powerful story to tell, and the state said the partnership will open new opportunities for collaboration, international partnerships, and knowledge exchange.

Sanwo-Olu was joined in London by members of his delegation including the Commissioners for Environment and Economic Planning and advisers on Sustainable Development Goals and Public-Private Partnerships, as the London Climate Action Week continues through June 28 with global leaders, investors, and stakeholders in clean energy and sustainability.
