Nigerian sprinter Godson Brume has been sentenced to 27 months in a United States federal prison after being convicted of unlawfully possessing a firearm while in the country on a non-immigrant student visa.

The 23-year-old former Louisiana State University (LSU) athlete was sentenced by a federal court in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He could also face deportation after serving his prison term.
Brume’s conviction stems from an incident on February 7, 2025, when he was arrested following a domestic dispute at his apartment complex.
According to court documents, the former SEC 100 metres champion was accused of firing a Glock 43X 9mm pistol multiple times during an argument with his former girlfriend, who had arrived at the apartment with their infant child.

Investigators said the dispute began outside the apartment before Brume allegedly discharged the firearm while the child was present.
Authorities stated that after returning to his apartment, another confrontation broke out when his former girlfriend entered the residence. The argument later continued outside, where Brume allegedly fired additional shots as the woman fled the scene.
Law enforcement officers reported finding multiple bullet impacts in the walls of the apartment complex.

Brume, who recorded a personal best of 9.90 seconds in the 100 metres and won the 2024 Southeastern Conference (SEC) title, was found guilty of possessing a firearm while being admitted to the United States under an F-1 student visa, an offence prohibited under federal law.
He was sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment and may be removed from the United States upon completion of his sentence.
