Nigeria has launched a nationwide programme to expand access to affordable Liquefied Petroleum Gas, with Bayelsa State hosting the first activation on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

The event marked the start of the National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme under the federal government’s Decade of Gas Initiative. Officials, industry stakeholders, development partners, community leaders, and women’s groups were present for the launch.

The Decade of Gas team said Bayelsa signals the beginning of a state-by-state rollout aimed at delivering clean cooking energy to communities across Nigeria.

The programme is designed to help households switch from firewood and charcoal to LPG. Officials say the transition will improve health outcomes, reduce environmental damage, and support sustainable economic growth.

It also aligns with the federal government’s plan to build a gas-powered economy by increasing domestic gas use and improving energy access nationwide. The target is to reach 5 million Nigerian households with clean cooking solutions through LPG by 2030.

Partners for the initiative include Seplat Energy, ExxonMobil, NNPC, NLNG, Dangote Group, SPDC, and TotalEnergies, according to the Decade of Gas website.
