The federal government says it will start winding down electricity subsidies next year.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made the announcement on Friday during a media session in Abuja, where he addressed Nigeria’s mounting power sector debt.
According to Tegbe, the subsidy removal will be done gradually starting in 2027. He assured that consumers won’t be left stranded, saying “Nigerians will not be deprived of any benefits” during the transition.
He also clarified that there are no plans to raise electricity tariffs right now, even as the government prepares for the subsidy phase-out.
The move is part of broader efforts to fix the power sector’s finances and reduce the debt burden on the government.
