Nigeria and China are taking their relationship to the next level, moving past buying and selling to focus on science, technology, sustainable farming and innovation.
The new direction was announced in Abuja on Friday during the opening of the 2026 “Seasonal Life & Harmonious China” Cultural Exhibition at the China Cultural Centre. The event is part of ongoing people-to-people exchanges between both countries.
Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, said the partnership is now “entering a season of unprecedented opportunity.”
“Just as seasons bring renewal and harvest, our ties with China are moving beyond trade into deep agricultural, technological and scientific transformation,” he said.
Dr. Muhammad pointed to a recent study tour to China’s Yangling High-tech Agricultural Demonstration Zone and Shaanxi Province as proof. There, the Nigerian delegation saw water-saving irrigation and soil-monitoring systems that help grow crops in dry areas with minimal water waste. He described Yangling as China’s “Agricultural Silicon Valley.”
He added that China’s work to reverse land degradation on the Loess Plateau could offer lessons for Northern Nigeria and the Lake Chad basin.
A major trade boost was also highlighted: China’s zero-tariff policy for products from 53 African countries. Dr. Muhammad said Nigerian exports like sesame, ginger, cashew nuts and cocoa can now compete more easily in China, which could raise rural incomes. But he noted Nigeria must first improve quality, packaging and supply chains to meet Chinese standards.
To prepare for that, the ministry plans to:
- Partner with Chinese research institutes on post-harvest management and agro-processing
- Develop affordable solar-powered cold storage for perishable goods
- Transfer technology to process cassava, shea butter and cashew into higher-value products
- Expand scholarships and STEM training for Nigerian scientists in Chinese universities, with focus on agriculture and water management
Congratulating the Communist Party of China on its 105th anniversary, Dr. Muhammad said China’s progress in poverty reduction, infrastructure and tech offers a model for developing nations.
Chinese Cultural Centre Councillor Yang Jianxing said the exhibition aligns with 2026 being both the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges and the 55th anniversary of Nigeria-China diplomatic relations.
The exhibition centered on China’s “seasonal life” philosophy and the UNESCO-recognized Twenty-Four Solar Terms — an approach to living in harmony with nature. Yang said that philosophy mirrors Nigerian values of respect for nature, tradition, family and community.
He added that the Centre will keep hosting cultural events, language classes, youth exchanges and tourism programs to deepen ties and implement agreements from the FOCAC Beijing Summit.
Visitors at the Abuja exhibition experienced traditional food tastings, craft displays, and interactive sessions on Chinese heritage, while officials on both sides pushed for more practical cooperation in science, tech and farming.
